As one of Gavin’s cub scout pack activities we went deep sea fishing.  Gavin had never been fishing and I had never been fishing off a boat so it was an adventure for both of us.  We left Newport Harbor at 8am and traveled for about an hour and a half to the fishing area, which was off Long Beach.  On the trip out there we saw a single whale and a pod of three whales swim by.  We passed two seals who were sleeping on their backs with all their flippers up in the air.  We also saw several dolphins.  While we were fishing we had two large pods of dolphins swim by.  Both stopped about 200 yards from us to do their own fishing.  For about an hour we had 40ish dolphins swimming and jumping around.

Gavin caught about 20 fish.  I didn’t catch any as the boat was a little crowded and I quickly figured out I needed to just help Gavin fish.  He needed help reeling the fish in anyway — we were pulling the fish up from about 150 feet which was a bit of work.

Once we got home we had some of his fish for dinner.  Most of them ended up in the freezer for another day.

One of Gavin’s cub scout pack events was a trip to the Long Beach Aquarium.  It was scout day there, so it was really busy.  It was interesting going there in a little of hoard of 20 little boys.  Just keeping them all traveling in the same direction in the crowds was a bit nerve-racking.  Gavin loves nothing better than running around with his friends, so he had a ton of fun.  Tristan came along too and had a lot of fun seeing all the animals.  Gavin made me take him back three times to the tank where you can pet the sharks (little ones).  It was a tiring day, but everyone had a good time.

Well cub scouts has officially kicked off with the first pack meeting.  Gavin thought it was pretty boring as it was just a lot of information for parents and setting up the dens and meeting people, nothing fun.  He did get to be part of the color guard and brought the cub scout flag in (see video).  Next meeting should be more fun and there is a camp out next month that he’s looking forward too.
